In a 101-list aboriginal Canadians voted 102

Thursday 17 July 2008 @ 11:44 pm

A government sponsored list of 101 things that most define Canada missed the most Canadian thing — aboriginals.

The list was commissioned by Citizenship and Immigration Canada and the Dominion Institute.

Number one in the list is the maple leaf followed by Vimy Ridge and Queen Elizabeth. The Canadian Flag made it to #4.

Over 2,000 Canadians as well as educators and Order of Canada recipients from coast to coast participated. The result is a ranked list of 101 people, places, symbols, events and innovations that respondents believe define our country.

Well, looks like none of the 2000 participants realized that the aboriginal Canadians were important enough to be included in the list. They have set up a site to to ask people “What is missing?” in which general public can cast a vote for #102. That was how aboriginal Canadians were voted 102. People also want Canada “Eh?” in the list. More recommendation are listed here.

Simple Tips – how to zzz…zzz

Friday 25 April 2008 @ 11:45 pm

Tension, competition and day to day hassles have caused people to loose sleep and wake up early. Have you tried and tried to sleep all night and woke up the next day tired, cranky and unproductive? If that is you, you have to know that studies suggest – not getting adequate sleep can increase your risk for heart disease and depression, and can even cause weight gain.

You might say “I can’t help it!”

But ‘where there is will there is way’ too. Why don’t you try these simple tips:

No mobile phones before sleep

Researchers at Wayne State University in Detroit not to talk in your cell phone before bed. They found that people who were exposed to the slight radiation that emanates from cell phones took longer to fall asleep and spent less time in the deep stages of slumber.

Sleep prepared, get cozy

Make it dark – draw the blinds.
Block out distracting sounds – turn on a fan or a soothing CD of nature noises.
Swapping ordinary bedroom bulbs for yellow ones can help you feel more tranquil as you’re getting ready to nod off.
Treat yourself to a cozy new comforter or put flowers on your nightstand – things that motivate you to go to bedroom.

Say Thanks

I am not that religious and even an atheist can take two minutes to reflect on the things one is grateful for. Practicing grateful thinking makes people more optimistic and going to sleep with happy thoughts help in sleeping more soundly.

That’s it!
GOOD NIGHT!

Tantric Master – New Ice Record of 72 hours

Tuesday 29 January 2008 @ 1:55 am

To break his own this man, who calls himself a Tantric Master, stood on a Manhattan street in a clear container filled with ice for an hour and 12 minutes.

Wim Hof, 48, told that he survives in the ice by controlling his body temperature through tantric meditation. It was in 2004 Hof set the world record for full body ice contact endurance by immersing himself in ice for an hour and eight minutes.

The Dutch man, commonly nicknamed Iceman, holds nine world records including a world record for longest ice bath. In 2007, he attempted, but failed, to climb Mt. Everest in shorts. It is told that he has plans another attempt in 2008.

Hof claims Tantra, an Eastern tradition of ritual and meditation, is behind his extraordinary performance. (CBS)

On March 16, 2000 Hof swam 57.5 m. (188.6 ft.) under three feet of an ice lake near the Finnish village of Kolari, deep inside the Arctic Circle. Using no special equipment, he wore only swim shorts and a pair of goggles! Here is the video of his adventure:

Geekiest Tattoo on the Neck

Sunday 25 November 2007 @ 12:36 pm

nerdy-tattoo-on-neck

Well, does the tattoo in left sound familiar ?

What do you think: Is he obsessed with tattoos or web designing!

Computer language and computer are the fastest changing subjects in the world. It still feel like yesterday that I was amazed on learning what an internet was. HTML is computer language to talk between client’s computer and internet server. Who knows , HTML might be replaced by some other language and won’t be there tomorrow. But tattoo in other hand is engraved forever. (I wish the photo in left side is not real tattoo but a photoshoped photograph!)

Let’s expect tattoo removal thing will be even more easier thing by then.

Well, here are other funny tattoos… I can go on posting huge number of tattoo symbols on different parts of body and different subjects. But let me post some I like. Here are some bar codes on head and hand.

Beautiful Rainbow during Jasper Tour

Friday 13 July 2007 @ 1:12 pm

We went to Jasper in the Canada Day (July 1) weekend and it was a great tour. I am a bit busy to write all about it but I couldn’t resist posting a rainbow I saw there. This is the most incredible rainbow I ever witnessed in my life. The full semi-circle, double layered rainbow was so beautiful that people in the street stopped by to look it as if something strange was going-on at the horizon. I couldn’t capture the full semi-circle in a single photo so I am posting two photos to make it complete. The second bigger semi-circle in the first photo is not that clear but it can be seen more clearly in the second photo.

WiTricity and Nikola Tesla: Wireless electricity

Monday 11 June 2007 @ 12:38 pm

witricityt242941l

“Goodbye wires … MIT team experimentally demonstrates wireless power transfer, potentially useful for powering laptops, cell phones without cords.”

That was the MIT news release. And there was flood of news about this new technology.

We moved one step closer to a world where plugging in your laptop, cell phone, iPod, and even a lamp for power is no longer required. Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a wireless electricity called “WiTricity” that can transmit electricity wirelessly. (from PC world)

But many people think differently. They claim this is not a new invention but it was already invented a century back by Nikola Tesla. You can see Tesla’s demonstration of “the transmission of electrical energy without wires” in 1891 in this photo and it is explained in this wikipedia page.

But it is also true that the invention was not implemented in the real world. With whatever I have read and learnt, it is clear that WiTricity concept is not recreation of Tesla principle either. This small clip Tesla – The Lost WizardA brief biography on the brilliant inventor, Nikola Tesla from History Channel would be very nice addition:

Free Press Release Websites

Sunday 29 April 2007 @ 10:02 pm

Don’t know if they are viewed by many people or not but they sure do exist. Just to test their effectiveness, I have posted in one of the free press release website. Well, it was not well-prepared and I was just testing I have created a release statement like this.

With these sites around you can release a press-release on your first love or a break-up or even a statement that your can refused to eat your most expensive pet food.

I would appreciate comments on the reader’s comment on their experience with similar sites.

I found some 23 such press release sites in this blog. Some costing as much as $2850 (that sounds promising!).
