Desktop Computer – Google says it is at the end of its life

Sunday 7 March 2010 @ 2:16 pm

courier Google Europe sales chief John Herlihy says that the Desktop computer will reach its end of life in 3 years. Herlihy was speaking at the Digital Landscapes conference at UCD.

“In three years time, desktops will be irrelevant. In Japan, most research is done today on smart phones, not PCs.”

The view reflects Google CEO Eric Schmidt’s view at the recent GSM Association Mobile World Congress 2010.  Schmidt told that Google is looking everything through mobile lens, centering on the cloud, computing and connectivity.

The fear is the next Sergey and Larry will come up with a disruptive technology or service that will eliminate the need for Google… … The digital world is fundamentally different to the traditional business world. Things happen much faster, websites spring up from nowhere, a video could be a YouTube hit in hours.

Olympics Women’s Ice Hockey – Cigar beer and gold medal

Friday 26 February 2010 @ 11:10 am

womens_ice_hockey_gold Some time after they beat the United States 2-0 on Thursday, the Canadian women’s ice hockey team came back from the locker room and staged a party on ice. The party involved bottles of champagne, beer cans and cigars.

Among others was 18-year-old superstar Marie-Philip Poulin, who was also drinking alcohol on the ice. The legal drinking age in British Columbia however is 19.

The IOC has frowned on the action and has said that it would look into the matter.

The winning team should have acted in a bit more responsive manner on the celebration of their winning — drinking and smoking on the ice was a bit more than expected. (photo – AP)

5-months pregnant athlete in Olympics

Tuesday 16 February 2010 @ 6:37 pm

5_month_pregnant_olympic_contestant Five and half months pregnant, 30 year-old, Kristie Moore, is one of the Team Canada curling team members competing in the Winter Olympics being held in Vancouver, Canada.

She is the third pregnant athlete ever to compete in Olympic games.

Ninety years ago, Swedish figure skater Magda Julin won a gold medal at the Antwerp Games while in her first trimester and Germany’s Diana Sartor took fourth in the skeleton in 2006.

Moore is an alternative player and there is vey little chance she will actually play in the game. She is a backup player and will be called in only if she is needed. Even if she didn’t play, she will receive the medal Canada wins, if her team wins.

Good luck with the team. For the unborn child, it would certainly be an honor to be born with an Olympic medal! (Kristie in Yahoo)

Global warming mystery

Tuesday 16 February 2010 @ 12:23 am

globalwarming For the first time, a senior scientist working with the U.N. report on climate change has admitted that there is no real global warming in current time.

The scientist behind the so-called "climate-gate" e-mail scandal admitted that there is no statistically significant global warming since 1995. The scientist believe that the time between 800 and 1300 A.D. could actually had been warmer than present temperatures.

Such a news will be a blow to global warming advocates and it makes a easy for a layman not to believe in global warming. A recent BBC poll found that there is already a decrease in global warming believers.

The Populus poll of 1,001 adults found 25% did not think global warming was happening, an increase of 10% since a similar poll was conducted in November.

The pdf version of the poll report can be downloaded here.

Believe or not earth has warmed-up as compared to a near past. But it has warmed and cooled a number of times (at least twice) in the past 1000 years.

It might be an interesting read to understand: "If global warming real why is it cold?"

Go Norway, UN index rates best life in the western Scandinavia

Monday 5 October 2009 @ 6:55 pm

world_mapWhen it comes to the quality of life, Norway enjoys the world’s highest ranking country according to a United Nations agency. The annual Human Development Index prepared by the UN Development Program found that the country with the worst quality of life is Niger with life expectancy of just over 50 years. The Index was prepared by taking life expectancy, literacy, school enrolment and per capita gross domestic product in 182 countries.

The second best in the list was Australia followed by Iceland. Canada ranked fourth (not bad!) and the United States was in 13th place.

Trends in the index since 1980 showed an average improvement of 15 per cent in countries’ scores. The greatest long-term improvements have been shown by China, Iran and Nepal, but progress has been concentrated in education and health rather than income, said the UN agency. (source)

Heaviest baby born in Indonesia

Wednesday 23 September 2009 @ 10:36 pm

heavy_baby_indo Normally babies are born in a range of 2 to 4 kgs. But according to the 2008 edition of Guinness World Records, the heaviest newborn ever recorded was a baby born in 1879 that weighed nearly 23 pounds.

It might not be a world record, but a 8.7 kg(19.2-pound) baby made an a record of heaviest baby ever born in Indonisia.

The 41 years old mother, Ani, is diabetic. When a diabetic mother’s glucose level gets high during pregnancy, the baby can receive too much glucose and grow too large.

The un-named baby beat the Indonesia’s previous heaviest baby record, weighing 6.9 kgs born in 2007 on the outskirts of the capital Jakarta. (news source)

No more a ‘do-call’ list ?

Thursday 27 August 2009 @ 5:42 pm

do-call-listCanadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission started its do-not-call list last September. I was so happy about it and registered in it right away. But the unwanted marketing calls kept on coming. I warned some of them and ignored many. I did complain about some callers. But nothing happened. We started calling it a do-call list and life went on as usual. I was not alone and everybody was receiving such calls. A consumer watchdog report even warned that registering in the list would invite more such calls.

Better late than never, it was a relief to hear that CRTC has woken up and started nabbing the violators. In the news release, the CRTC has said that it has fined Rob Sugar $4,000 and that it has also issued $10,000 fines to Roofing by Peerless Mason Ltd. and Waterproofing by Peerless Mason Inc.

Watch out telemarketers! CRTC is after you. Companies that call persons registered on the do-not-call list can be fined up to $15,000 per call while individuals can be charged $1,500 per call.

Divorce Settlement – Cut the house in two

Tuesday 14 October 2008 @ 4:04 pm

Looks like in a divorce settlement a Cambodian couple want everything to be divided into half – even the house. The guy found some of his relatives and saws to cut the wooden house in half. The ex-wife is reported to be living in the standing half of the house they once shared.

The 42-year-old Cambodian man, Moeun Sarim, found himself not getting along well with his 35-year-old wife, Vat Navy, in their 18-year wedlock.

Vat said that the divorce was prompted by her husband’s jealousy about her alleged relationship with a policeman in the village. She denied having an extramarital affair. (source)

Grandma gave birth to triplet

Thursday 26 June 2008 @ 5:54 pm

This is not a scientific achievement as was in this case when a grandmother gave birth to her own grandchild.

An Australian grandmother has given birth to naturally conceived triplets. Janelle Perry, a week short of turning 47 years, gave brith to three boys by caesarian section at Mater Mothers’ Hospital in the east coast city of Brisbane on 19th June 2008.

Newcomers Cooper, Kyle and Jordan join the five more brothers and sisters including four children in their 20s from an earlier marriage and a four-year-old daughter, Rebecca, with her husband Robert.

“Rebecca kept telling me in November, ‘You’ve got three babies in your tummy, Mummy — one for me, one for Dad and one for you’,” Perry said.

“I thought, ‘No way’ and told her, ‘There’s no babies in there’. Then, in December, I found out I was pregnant.”

David Molloy from the Queensland Fertility group said the chance of having identical triplets at the age of 46 was “probably the same as winning Gold Lotto.” (Yahoo news)
