Most hated internet words includes ‘Blog’

Thursday 21 June 2007 @ 12:53 pm

Have you ever felt like banging your head on your keyboard when you see dumb words while surfing? British pollsters YouGov questioned some 2,091 adults earlier this month to find out which are the most detested words going around in internet.

In a news release by yahoo news quoting AFP, “blog” is the third most hated word among internet community (I don’t believe in it though!).

Folksonomy‘, a term for a web classification system topped the list of most hated word followed by ‘blogosphere’, the collective name for blogs or online journals. ‘wiki‘, a collaborative website edited by its readers got the tenth position.

Ten most hated words in their order:
* Folksonomy
* Blogosphere
* Blog
* Netiquette
* Blook
* Webinar
* Vlog
* Social Networking
* Cookie
* Wiki

iLord, Thy Phone …

iphone

‘iPhone will feature up to 8 hours of talk time, 6 hours of Internet use, 7 hours of video playback or 24 hours of audio playback. In addition, iPhone will feature up to 250 hours—more than 10 days—of standby time. Apple also announced that the entire top surface of iPhone, including its stunning 3.5-inch display, has been upgraded from plastic to optical-quality glass to achieve a superior level of scratch resistance and optical clarity.’

That was the new press release from Apple.

The combination iPod and smartphone will be available at 6 p.m. local time on Friday, June 29, at Apple and AT&T retail stores. The iPhone will be priced at US$499 for the 4GB model, or $599 for the 8GB model.

For that price, it is not unfair to expect all-around features. But, inspite of all the hypes, it is not that perfect piece of gadget. Here are some of the shortcomings I came to know:

  1. Although it is supposed to have the “full internet”, it won’t even have the Adobe Flash Player! Well, it sounds like it won’t be much happy surfing on many sites with flash animations and sites like YouTubes won’t be of much fun either.
  2. It will not support Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), so users won’t be able to send text messages with pictures or video to other cell phone users.
  3. The iPhone does not offer Global Positioning System (GPS) capability.
  4. Third-party applications will be allowed only as web-based applications loaded from the internet on the iPhone’s Safari web browser.
  5. In order to use an iPhone, buyers will be required to first set up an account with the iTunes store using their credit cards, even if they have no intention of buying anything there. This is in addition to the required carrier contract with AT&T.

Some Apple fans and iGod might diagree with me but inspite of all the great features I don’t think this phone is made for me!

Edit: Found pictures of (future?) versions of iphone here and wanted to share with you! Here goes - iPhone, iPhone Nano and iPhone Shuffle.

Canada: Still in the Stone Age of wireless Telecommunication

Saturday 16 June 2007 @ 8:28 am

Cell phone bills are really a headache in this part of the world. Everytime I want to call somebody I have to calculate the remaining free-minutes in the plan. I can’t afford not having a landline!

To backup my everyday feelings, a recent analyst report calls Canada’s mobile phone adoption rate “a national disgrace”.

SeaBoard Group report, Lament for a Wireless Nation states that the average wireless customer in Canada pays 56% more than his U.S counterpart.

Canadian wireless penetration is 58%, second last in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries and 20 percentage points behind the United States.

… Canada is a wireless telecommunications backwater whose citizens pay more money for fewer features, and some argue that our slow adoption of true next-generation high-speed wireless data networks has cost the country billions in lost productivity and opportunity.

I believe on SeaBoard’s belief that relatively high cell phone prices in Canada suppress demand for wireless services.

I wish I could update this post with some good news soon !!!

“I look exactly like your dad”

Wednesday 13 June 2007 @ 5:11 pm

bradangelindA new research at Durham University UK on women’s behaviour shows that women who get on well with their fathers tend to marry men with similar facial characteristics. Those having difficult relationships with their fathers tend to choose men with very different looks.

Well, it seems a new love phrase for love-struck guys is brewing up - “I look exactly like your dad”. But be aware… you need to study past history of your girlfriend too. Only “Daddies’ Girls” look for men like their fathers!

I am sorry for those girls with fathers having unique face! You are bound to get a hard time finding your love.

WiTricity and Nikola Tesla: Wireless electricity

Monday 11 June 2007 @ 12:38 pm

“Goodbye wires … MIT team experimentally demonstrates wireless power transfer, potentially useful for powering laptops, cell phones without cords.”

That was the MIT news release. And there was flood of news about this new technology.

We moved one step closer to a world where plugging in your laptop, cell phone, iPod, and even a lamp for power is no longer required. Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a wireless electricity called “WiTricity” that can transmit electricity wirelessly. (from PC world)

But many people think differently. They claim this is not a new invention but it was already invented a century back by Nikola Tesla. You can see Tesla’s demonstration of “the transmission of electrical energy without wires” in 1891 in this photo and it is explained in this wikipedia page.

But it is also true that the invention was not implemented in the real world. With whatever I have read and learnt, it is clear that WiTricity concept is not recreation of Tesla principle either. This small clip Tesla - The Lost Wizard - A brief biography on the brilliant inventor, Nikola Tesla from History Channel would be very nice addition:
